Rod Smith
Rod developed his marketing skills with Michelin Canada in the 1970s and moved to the not-for-profit sector as Director of Marketing and Development for CentreStage / Canadian Stage Company. During three years as Manager of Project Revenue with TVOntario, he raised over $18 million from corporate and private sources. He also served as Director of Development for ISEC (the International Space Education Consortium), a joint venture of the Canadian Space Agency, NASA, TVOntario, Penn State University , the National Science Teachers Association and the Nature Conservancy of Canada where he raised over $15 million. On the west coast, Rod worked with EcoTrust, an international organization dedicated to preservation and sustainable use of the rainforest ecosystems from California to Alaska , before going to Vancouver Island where he has just completed funding of a hotel for the Chemainus Theatre Festival. He is currently working on financing a National Gallery of Aboriginal Art in Vancouver.
As a consultant, Rod has worked with many organizations on issues ranging from strategic planning and board development to telemarketing campaigns. Among his clients were the Stratford Festival, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Edmonton Opera, Ontario Arts Council, Tarragon Theatre, Alzheimer Canada and Amnesty International.
In demand as a teacher and workshop leader, Rod has lectured at York University, Humber College and remains on the faculty of the Banff Centre of Management where he teaches courses in marketing and fund raising for the not-for-profit sector.
